Kanji are Chinese characters which were introduced to Japan more than 1500 yeas ago when the Japanese Language did not have a writing system. Hiragana and katakana evolved later in Japan based on the simplified Chinese characters.

Kanji represents both meanings and sounds. Most  kanij posses multiple readings, which are divided into 2 types: on-yomi (Chinese readings) and kun-yomi (Japanese readings).

This free application imiwa? is a multilingual Japanese dictionary that does not require an internet connection. You see the meaning, how to read and stroke order.
