Adjectives

There are two types of adjectives in Japanese. One type is called い adjective, and the other type な adjective.  い and な are their last syllables when they modify nouns.

 

い adjectives:

おもしろい　えいが　

an interesting movie

 

な adjectives:

きれいな　しゃしん　 

a beautiful picture

 

Japanese adjectives conjugate for tense 

Present, past, polarity (affirmative and negative), and so forth, just as verbs do. The each types of adjectives follow different conjugation　　　

い adjective-さむい
present	affirmative		Nagetive
	さむい　です	Add です	さむく　ない　です　or さむく　あり　ません	Replace い　with く and add ないです　or くありません
	It is cold		It is not cold
past	さむかった　です	Replace い with かったです	さむく　なかった　です　or さむく　あり　ません　でした	Replace い　with く　and add なかったです　or  くありませんでした
	It was cold		It was cold

  

な adjectiveげんき（な）

	げんき　です	Add です	げんき　じゃ　ないです　or げんき　じゃ　ありません	Add じゃない　です　or　 じゃありません
	I am fine		I am not fine
past	げんき　でした	Add でした	げんきじゃ　なかった　です　or げんきじゃ　あり　ません　でした	Add じゃなかった　です　or　 じゃありませんでした
	I was fine		I was not fine

※In addition to these two forms in the negative, you can also substitute では for じゃ as in ではありません and ではありませんでした which are more often used in the written language than in the spoken language.
