Verb stem

The term 'verb stem', in Japanese grammar refers to the base part of the verb and is used in many different constructions. The easiest way to identify the stem of a verb is to remove the 'ます' when the verb is in it long (polite) form. The part of the verb that remains is the verb stem.

For example:

If you are familiar with long form, see the section “How to conjugate to dictionary form to polite form” in the article: Verb conjugation (present tense)
